3 Simple Courtroom Etiquette Rules For Your Family Law Case

by Layla Bryant

Going through a divorce is hard. It isn't something you can exactly plan for. It often happens out of the blue when you least expect it. While you are stuck trying to figure things out and make sense of it all, you need to make sure you understand a few things about the way the courtroom works. You don't want to go in and do something that could jeopardize your case or make you look bad in front of the judge. To help you out, here are three simple courtroom etiquette rules you want to follow.

Be prepared.

One of the main things you want to do is be prepared for your hearing. Don't go in there fumbling for paperwork or telling the judge sorry I don't have that information right now. Make sure you have everything in order. It shows that you are prepared and ready to deal with the situation at hand. It also shows that you are responsible, which is huge in family law cases.

Arrive on time.

One of the worst things you can do is to show up to the hearing late. It wastes the judge's time and doesn't look good for you. You are better off being there a few minutes early and sitting in the courtroom waiting for the judge to call your name than you are trying to sneak into the courtroom even five or ten minutes after you were scheduled to be there. They don't care what your excuse is for being late. Make sure to do whatever it takes to be there ahead of schedule.

Dress appropriately.

Don't walk into court wearing a sweatshirt and jeans. Make sure you wear business attire. You are going in front of the judge after all. Simple grooming tips can go a long way. Shower, shave, brush your teeth, all of the basic things that you should do anyway. Don't go in with some crazy hairstyle or pink hair. That isn't going to look good for you either. Plain, clean, neat and simple. That's the best rules you can follow when dealing with the legal system. You might not even realize how much of a difference it can make in your case, but it does. You want to leave a good impression on the judge, not one where they are wondering what the heck you have going on.

In following the simple tips above, you can get through your court case with ease and walk away confident in knowing you handled everything appropriately.
